On 4×4 you guard one corner. On 5×5 you can develop a second chain on the opposite side. Your main chain feeds one corner; a secondary chain (built from the overflow) feeds the far side. When they meet, you get enormous merges.

Keep the middle row and column as a staging lane — tiles move through it but never live there.

Patience is the real skill

A full 8192 run takes a long time. Settle into a rhythm: sweep left, sweep down, clean the middle, repeat. Avoid sudden direction changes — they scramble your chains. If the board starts to feel chaotic, stop and tidy the middle before continuing.
